Cavities are considered the most common oral health problem among children and adults. Forming as a result of poor oral hygiene and unhealthy diets, they damage tooth enamel and put smiles at risk if treatment is neglected. At Grand Dental - Franklin Park, we have two prosthodontists who can deliver beautiful results in the form of tooth-colored fillings. Instead of using regular amalgam to fill in these decayed areas, the composite resin we use will blend in with teeth to create a seamless method of repair. Call our office to schedule an appointment to learn more about how we can fix your smile.
Made of composite resin, which is a combination of plastic or acrylic resin and a powdered glass filler, tooth-colored fillings are customizable restorations that can be color-matched to blend in with a person’s existing smile.
The resin is more malleable than amalgam, which means an individual gets to keep more of their natural tooth structure. This lowers the risk of future damage. It also does not expand when exposed to hot temperatures – a problem that often occurs with regular amalgam fillings.
A tooth-colored filling can be placed in a single appointment, making it a highly convenient form of treatment.
One of our experts will begin by using a shade guide to select the correct color of the composite resin. We’ll then use local anesthesia to numb the tooth, so the patient feels no pain throughout the procedure. Once our team is satisfied, we’ll begin removing the decayed portions of the tooth before cleaning and drying the area in preparation for the tooth-colored filling.
The tooth will need to be etched and bonded before the composite resin is put in place. This layering process will fill the hole in the tooth. A curing light will then be used to harden the resin in place. After shaping the tooth to ensure a comfortable bite, it will receive a final polish.
Choosing to receive tooth-colored fillings is an option many patients do not regret. Not only do they offer a more visually pleasing aesthetic, but they serve as a durable and reliable alternative to regular amalgam. Additional benefits include:
