Dentists throughout the country offer dental sedation to patients who may be anxious, worried, or fearful of treatment. Depending on the professional and their training, they may not offer as many options for patients to choose from when considering this approach, but what about those who offer everything from nitrous oxide to IV sedation? Can a dentist put you to sleep while in the treatment chair? Read on to discover the different methods used and which one offers the most powerful effect.

Will Your Dentist Put You to Sleep for Treatment?

The answer differs between patients. Based on your medical history, current medications, the complexity of your treatment, and the need for additional assistance, your dentist may recommend powerful sedation to help you feel more at ease.

In most cases, sedation medication can take the edge off and help you feel less nervous. If dental care cannot be safely administered without it, your dentist may suggest a stronger method to ensure you receive the treatment you need.

What Types of Dental Sedation Are Available?

Generally, there are three types of sedation: nitrous oxide, oral conscious sedation, and sleep dentistry in Franklin Park, or IV sedation.

Nitrous Oxide

This method is the mildest option and is safe for virtually all patients. Inhaled as a colorless gas, the effects come on quickly and dissipate just as fast once treatment is over. Its ability to help you feel more at ease and relaxed allows your dentist to complete the necessary work to improve your oral health.

Oral Conscious Sedation

Offered as a prescribed medication to be taken an hour or more before your appointment, its effects take time to set in. However, once you are comfortably seated, you will fall into a deep state of relaxation and become unbothered by the dental work in your mouth. The post-procedural effects take time to wear off, so you are encouraged to have someone escort you home after your appointment.

IV Sedation

Also referred to as sleep dentistry, IV sedation is administered through a needle placed in the arm or hand so the medication can enter your bloodstream and take effect. You are not fully sedated, but you may doze off during your appointment. This option is ideal if you struggle to see your dentist out of fear or are undergoing a complex procedure.

With any of these sedation methods, you can still be awakened by your dental team, if needed. However, if you want to remain more relaxed during your visit, don’t hesitate to ask your dentist about available dental sedation.
