Securing Your Smile: How Does Denture Adhesive Work?

The dentures created today are vastly different than those fabricated centuries ago. With newer materials and more accurate molds, these prosthetics deliver a more natural appearance and durable fit than ever before. However, regular suction can only do so much, which is why additional products can be used to help secure teeth in place. But how does denture adhesive work? Keep reading to find out.

Why is Denture Adhesive Necessary?

There is no requirement when it comes to wearing dentures and using denture adhesive; however, most individuals keep a tube on hand should they begin to feel their prosthetic teeth slipping. Applying it to the base of the dentures can give you greater confidence when showing off your smile, helping you to worry less when around others.

Other reasons denture adhesive might be used include:

  • Dry mouth caused by certain medications, as a lack of moisture can make adhesive less effective and cause dentures to feel loose and be unable to remain in place.
  • Professions that require a lot of talking, singing, or pressure placed against the face (i.e., teachers, singers, athletes, etc.)

Are There Different Kinds of Adhesive?

Yes, there are a few different options when it comes to choosing a denture adhesive. Depending on your criteria (i.e., convenience, fit, cleanup, etc.), you might opt for a paste, powder, wafer, or strip. The choice is ultimately yours, but paste is often the most frequently used by denture wearers.

When meeting with your dentist, it’s important that you inquire about which option they might recommend. Based on their opinion and advice, you can better decide how you want to proceed should you choose to use denture adhesive.

How Do You Properly Use Denture Adhesive?

When applying denture adhesive, it’s important that you follow the directions. This will include:

  • Step 1: Clean your dentures thoroughly and make sure they are dry.
  • Step 2: Apply the denture adhesive using the provided directions.
  • Step 3: Rinse your mouth before inserting your dentures.
  • Step 4: Quickly position and hold your dentures in place for several seconds to ensure attachment.

Typically, when determining how much adhesive to use, you’ll only need a small amount. The packaging will tell you how much, but you should expect a small tube (about 2 ounces) to last about two months. Should you notice that the adhesive is spilling over into your mouth, you’re using far too much.

When taking out your dentures, you’ll need to rinse your mouth with warm water before gently rocking them back and forth. You can remove any additional adhesive with your soft-bristled toothbrush and warm water. Soaking them for a short while can be helpful to eliminate any bacteria, and then place them in water so they do not become dry.

With all of the options out there, you’re sure to find an adhesive that is perfect for you.
