3 Signs You Are Not a Good Candidate for Sedation Dentistry

You’re anxious about visiting the dentist, and you’ve avoided treatment for years. You know you need a regular checkup and cleaning, but you’re not sure whether you qualify for sedation dentistry. Although this method can help alleviate your fears and nervousness, not everyone is considered a good candidate. Here are 3 signs that dental sedation may not be right for you.

You Are Pregnant

If you are pregnant, most dentists will recommend that you avoid sedation until after the baby is born. The reason is that being in your first trimester can cause developmental issues and potentially affect the placenta. If you are in your third trimester, it can lead to preterm birth.

Dental sedation is safest during the second trimester, but even still, it’s not recommended. Only in instances when treatment is required can it be used. In these instances, the mildest form of sedation – nitrous oxide – should be administered.

You Have Sleep Apnea

If you have been diagnosed with sleep apnea, you should not receive IV sedation. Here’s why: sleep apnea occurs when the airway is obstructed, resulting in cessation of breathing. When administering IV sedation, the goal is to help patients relax. During the process, you may doze off, causing your throat muscles to collapse and cause an apnea episode.

Also, IV sedation is designed to suppress breathing and lower your oxygen level. This can be problematic and even dangerous if you have sleep apnea.

You Are Allergic to the Medications Used

If oral conscious or IV sedation is the recommended method, you may not be eligible if you are allergic to the medications that are used. Generally, benzodiazepines are what your dentist will use; however, if you have a bad reaction to these medicines, it can pose a serious problem.

This is why you are required to meet with your dentist before any procedure to discuss your medical history and current medications. By evaluating your current overall health, they can determine whether it is safe for you to receive dental sedation. If oral conscious or IV sedation cannot be administered, they may recommend nitrous oxide to at least help take the edge off during treatment.

If you are not eligible to receive dental sedation, do not worry. There are other options available to help reduce anxiety and keep you comfortable during your visit. Whether it’s breathing exercises, headphones, or another similar approach, your dentist will ensure you remain at ease.
