The reason a small portion (only 0.5mm) of tooth enamel must be removed from teeth that are receiving veneers is that not only does it ensure that the restoration lays flat against the natural tooth, avoiding the possibility of a bulkier look, but it also ensures that the veneer will adhere to the tooth and remain firmly in place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The bonding agent that is used must penetrate the enamel and \u201clatch onto\u201d the surface. In doing so, it helps to keep the veneers snugly against the tooth so that it does not fall off easily.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Does the Removal of Tooth Enamel Hurt?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Fortunately, when your cosmetic dentist begins the process of removing tooth enamel, you will not feel a thing. It is common for dentists to administer a numbing agent so that appropriate areas of the mouth remain numb while undergoing this type of treatment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Naturally, once the anesthesia wears off, your teeth may feel a bit more sensitive while wearing temporary veneers; however, this will only last a short time. As soon as your permanent veneers are in place, you\u2019ll be able to start using your new teeth and appreciating your new appearance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although veneers can stay in place for 10+ years, they do require replacement over time. This is often confusing to some patients who learn that these are considered a permanent form of cosmetic dentistry; however, what makes it permanent is the removal of tooth enamel, which cannot be reversed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
